Sales of gym shoes rose 2.5% to $9.4 billion in the second quarter as retailers looked to compete against Amazon, according to data from research firm NPD Group.
That’s a sign that the company’s fitness apparel business is doing well as the online retailer’s stock continues to rally.
Sales of gym trainers, sneakers, yoga mats and other gym gear increased 2.7% in the quarter.
On Monday, Amazon announced a partnership with NPD to help track sales of its fitness equipment.
The company is partnering with the retailer to collect data on the physical activity of its customers.NPD said the NPD Sports Activity Index rose to 47.5 for the quarter, up from 43.9 in the prior quarter.
