The Los Angeles Lakers are moving forward with plans to move the LA Gym to the same parking lot as the Staples Center.
Sources told ESPN that the new facility will include more than 600,000 square feet of retail space and will include the same amenities as the current LA Gym.
The Staples Center is set to open in 2020.
Los Angeles Lakers forward LaMarcus Aldridge and guard Jahlil Okafor are expected to be among the first NBA players to play at the new Los Angeles Gym, which will also be used for basketball games, concerts and other events.
A source told ESPN’s Darren Rovell that the Lakers will not use a separate locker room for athletes or their parents.
Los Angelenos have been clamoring for a new Los Angels Gym for years.
There have been multiple proposals from the city and NBA to build a new facility in the past.
However, a plan to build the facility in LA has remained a top priority for the Los Angeles City Council, which is led by Councilman Mitch Englander.
Aldridge, who will be playing in his final season with the Lakers, told reporters in May that he was “excited” to be in the Lakers locker room.
He said he was confident that the city would support the plan.
